M Basses is Connecticut’s premiere builder of fine handcrafted guitars!

With so many choices out there it’s hard to decide which direction to go when having an instrument built these days... This page is intended to give you a little information about me, so that if you are inclined to have me build an instrument for you, or perhaps let me repair or modify your favorite guitar or bass, you have some idea who you're dealing with.

My name is Jon Maghini and I established M Basses in the spring of 2001

I began this journey as an apprentice working with master luthier Ron Blake. Ron who had over 40 years in the industry took me on full time in 1998. My job there began with assembly work and quickly spread to surfacing and fretting necks, wiring, and building limited production runs of new instruments. Another huge part of my job with Ron was repairs and restorations; I covered everything from broken pegheads to replacing truss-rods and fingerboards on rare and vintage instruments…

After spending the better part of three years working with Ron I decided the time was right to go out on my own. I choose to build my instruments entirely by hand, keeping the quality high and the quantity to a minimum I strive to offer only the very best in M Basses. From the design and construction methods, to the finished set-up, it is my opinion that attention to detail makes all the difference!

My shop is fairly small and unusually clean! Actually I get teased quite a bit for how clean the shop really is, but don’t let it fool you there is a lot going on here! My door is always open, so feel free to stop in and check out some basses!
